Dear Reader:

Our state Legislature is comfortably full of lawmakers who belong to the political party that says it supports individual liberty and opposes bloated government.

This will be true for at least two more years, thanks to this month’s election.

Will they live up to that party’s principles?

It’s up to you and me to hold them accountable.

That’s why I’m asking you today to make a gift to Michigan Capitol Confidential, the news service of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

Michigan Capitol Confidential has one mission — to dig into government activity at all levels and report how that activity affects you, your freedom and your livelihood.

What will legislators do to fix our roads, and who will pay for it? Will lawmakers stand up for school choice or give way to the anti-charter school sentiment led by Detroit media? How will they deal with school districts that are failing to acknowledge right-to-work for teachers?

The answers to these questions have real consequences for all of us.

Just look at the city of Allen Park.

Lawmakers of both political parties voted in favor of giving generous state tax credits to moviemakers back in 2008.

Allen Park officials thought they could cash in by building a movie studio. But the deal went awry, the city went into debt, and the state ultimately sent in an emergency manager who just left in September. Getting the city back on track required a 10 percent reduction in pay for city employees, among others hard choices.

We need to expose future Allen Parks before they happen.

I hope you will consider a gift today to support a voice for free-market news in Michigan. Capitol Confidential is funded entirely by voluntary donations. Your gift is tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Sincerely,

Joseph G. Lehman
President

P.S. Capitol Confidential’s series of articles on the Michigan film incentive program just won third place among specialty publications in a competition sponsored by the Michigan Press Association. The judges called it “solid outlining of various aspects of wasted government money.” Please consider a gift today to help fill the need for investigative reporting about bloated government.
